Lucy's Emergency Caesarean and VBAC Story

Lucy's Caesarean

I got to the hospital at 7pm, 2 days after my due date.

I had been having contractions since 1am, and decided to go in at this point just to be checked over. On arrival to the hospital, the contractions started to come on a little stronger and more regular. After a VE it turned out i was already 3cm dilated, so they told me to stay.

I got in a hot bath and stayed in it for ages, until my next VE at 11.00 pm. I was still only 3cm, so they advised me to have some pethadine to help me get some rest. I agreed to this.

At 1am the my baby's heart beat was decelerating. I had a VE at 3am, and was still only 3cm, so they broke my waters for me. The contractions got a lot stronger, so at 4am I had some more pethadine.

I had VE at 5.30 am and was 4cm and put on a syntocinon drip. At 6am i started using gas and air. As the baby's heart beat was still decelerating, they took a fetal blood sample.

At 8am i was overcontracting, so they lowered the dose of synto, and gave me an epidural, then took another blood sample from the baby. The samples were all rejected.

At 8.35am it was decided to proceed with emergancy c-sect due to the failure to progress and fetal distress. I went in to theatre at 9.10am, the operation started at 9.27am, and my baby boy was born at 9.30am.

Lucy's VBAC

After feeling generally uncomfortable for 24 hours, at 10am I went in to the hospital on advice of my midwife to be checked over. It was confirmed that I was in early labour, and that I should go home and await developments. All afternoon I felt bad, having very irregular and weak contractions. At about 6pm they started to get stronger, but continued to be irregular and weren't lasting long. At 7pm I called the hospital and decided to go in.

I arrived at 8pm, and was put on the CTG. By this time I was contracting regularly every 3 mins and in pain, so I started the gas and air. I had a VE and was 4cm. The babys heart rate started to drop, so a DR was called in to review me.

At 9pm they broke my waters to check the colour - it was ok, and I was 6cm. They decided to do a fetal blood sample, and prepare for a possible c-sect as his heart rate was not improving. At 9.20-pm they took the sample and found that I was 8cm and attached a monitor to his head, which improved the trace a bit, but he was still in distress. Just 7mins later I was told to push as I was 10cm. They decided to help me out with a vontousse, and at 10.02 pm my baby boy was born.

Lucy's Thoughts on having a VBAC

I am so glad I chose to have vbac. I am really proud of myself, and the recovery time is so much quicker, I could do more for my baby in the early days.
